Having erectile dysfunction can be a taxing experience. There is one basic symptom of ED, being unable to maintain an erection long enough to have sexual intercourse. This problem though can be manifested in many different ways.
The first is the most common, psychological erectile dysfunction. Erections do begin in the brain after all. Causes of this form of ED can often be related to stress and anxiety. If you are able to maintain an erection during masturbation, but not with your partner, it’s likely that you have this form of ED. If you find yourself unable to maintain an erection with your partner, or while masturbating, this could be a sign of something more serious, and you should seek medical attention immediately.
Priapism is another form of ED in which the penis remains erect for upwards of 4 hours, and is usually very painful and is brought about without any sexual stimulation. This can occur at any age, from new born to the elderly. If this condition is not treated urgently, it could lead to permanent erectile dysfunction and scarring. A common cause of this can be misuse of medication, among other things.
The last common type of ED is Peyronie’s disease. This is caused primarily by scar tissue that form along the penis. Depending on the severity, the scarring can cause the penis to bend making sexual intercourse challenging and often times even uncomfortable or painful. The causes of this type are for the most part unclear, but is thought to be caused by past trauma that may have caused bleeding within the penis.
ED can manifest itself in many forms, all of which have their own challenges to overcome. If you believe that you may have any of these symptoms, contact your doctor to see which treatment is right for you.
